2018 Winter Olympics

Pyeongchang, South Korea

DroneShield’s counterdrone technology was deployed to protect the XXIII Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Held in February 2018, the Games featured 102 events across 15 sports, with 2,914 athletes from 92 National Olympic Committees participating .

Given the scale of the event, the risk of security breaches was elevated, particularly with the rise of unmanned aerial systems (UAS). High-profile events like the Olympics are targets for both terrorism and unauthorised drone activity. Drones attempting to capture footage can disrupt athletes and media operations, while malicious drone use poses even greater threats. These risks led organisers to seek comprehensive counter-UAS solutions for this international event.

DroneShield’s DroneSentry system was deployed to provide real-time alerts and allow security personnel to respond swiftly to potential UAS threats. RfOne radio frequency sensors detect signals from unmanned vehicles and ensures high-confidence detection of various threats. The system’s modular design enabled event organisers to customise components to meet their needs, while the Universal Mounting System (UMS Mk2) facilitated rapid set up and takedown – even in environments not originally designed to support such technology.

DroneShield’s drone detection systems played a crucial role in the event’s security, receiving formal confirmation from the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics Organizing Committee of the successful operation of its products.
